WHAT IS BIO
Biotechnology Internship Opportunities (BIO) is an ongoing collaboration between the Division of Biological Sciences and local biotech companies that provides outstanding Biology students with an opportunity to participate in research within an industrial setting.
Companies that wish to sponsor an intern through the BIO Program will be asked to identify a mentor within the company to whom the intern will report and who will provide a description of the training activities in which the intern will be involved. The intern's activities will be under the direction of both a workplace mentor and a faculty advisor at UCSD. The faculty advisor and the intern will meet weekly to discuss the intern's progress.
Students must submit their application and resume the quarter prior to placement. Applications for fall, winter or spring quarters can be submitted during the summer. Students need to specify the quarter they are seeking placement. Application and interview deadlines for each academic quarter are listed on the biointern.ucsd.edu web site under student calendar.
The intern will spend 14 hrs a week in the industry laboratory and will receive 4 units per quarter of elective credit by enrolling in the course BISP 197. Interns cannot receive financial compensation for the course. At the invitation of the company, the intern can continue through the following summer months for compensation, but will not receive academic credit.
