Resume Instructions:
Below are details to help you construct a resume:
Heading
- Your name is the most important fact. Place it at the top in boldface type. Don't forget address, phone, and e-mail address too. If you might be moving while your resume is in use, be sure to show both your current and permanent address and phone, appropriately labeled.
Job Objective
- Why are you seeking an internship? (Limit to a one or two line statement)
- Don't be too specific in regard to one course of study.
Experience
- Make the most of your experience. Experience comes in many forms. It includes what you have learned through prior work (full-time, part-time, seasonal jobs), volunteer activities, research and applied course work, community projects, offices held, and unique travel.
- Use your most important experience items to get the attention of the company. As you write down your experience, use language that is concise, positive and connotes action and achievement.
- If you have extensive experience, some of which is unrelated to your objective, divide them into two subsections: Related and Additional.
- Your accomplishments belong in your resume, either as part of your Experience section or as a section that stands on its own.
Education
- Identify your major and date of graduation, along with the name of your school. You may include on-the-job training, vocational schools, and certificates.
GPA
- A grade point average of 3.0 is required for the program. You are not required to state it on your resume unless you wish. If you have received a waiver, do not put your GPA
Your resume may also include optional information such as your leisure interests, affiliations, etc.
FORMATTING YOUR RESUME
What your resume looks like is important. Companies want to read materials that are pleasing to the eye.
Edit and Critique
- Spell and punctuate carefully.
Open Space
- Don't cramp your resume. Let open space accentuate your content. Don't clutter margin with dates.
Typography
- Don't skimp. Clear, dark print, however produced, is essential.
When preparing remember:
- Key words are critical.
- Begin each page with your name; multiple pages okay.
- Common, non-decorative typefaces; 10 - 14 point font sizes.
- Avoid italics, script, graphics, shading, underlining.
- Capitalized words and boldface okay.
