WHAT IS BIO
Biotechnology Internship Opportunities (BIO) is a collaboration between the Division of Biological Sciences and local biotech companies that provides outstanding Biology students with an opportunity to participate in research within an industrial setting.
Companies that wish to sponsor an intern through the BIO Program will be asked to identify a mentor within the company to whom the intern will report and who will provide a description of the training activities in which the intern will be involved. The intern's activities will be under the direction of both a workplace mentor and a faculty advisor at UCSD. The faculty advisor and the intern will meet monthly to discuss the interns progress.
Students apply to, and are interviewed for, BIO during the Fall Quarter, and work as interns for the Winter and Spring academic quarters.
The intern will spend a specified period of time (12-14 hrs/week) in the industry laboratory and will receive 4 units per quarter of elective credit by enrolling in the course BISP 197. Interns cannot receive financial compensation for the course. At the invitation of the company, the intern can continue through the following summer months for compensation, but will not receive academic credit.
